Robert D. Lieberthal is a Principal, Health Economics and Group Lead in the Health Behavioral and Social Sciences department of The MITRE Corporation. His work focuses on the application of application of economic tools and data-driven analyses to implement multidisciplinary solutions to improve the U.S. health and healthcare system.

The Health Behavioral Social department The Health Behavioral Social Sciences Department consists of a multi-disciplinary team that leverages broad and deep expertise in health communications, change management, health economics, organizational change, psychology, value-based purchasing, and social and behavioral sciences to improve national healthcare performance, information, and outcomes while reducing the cost of providing it in support of national healthcare.
Dr. Lieberthal has previously held faculty positions at Thomas Jefferson University and The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also has worked as an actuarial benefits consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals including Health Affairs and Health Services Research.
His book What Is Health Insurance (Good) For: An Examination of Who Gets It, Who Pays for It, and How to Improve It was published by SpringerNature in 2016 and is available in Chinese translation.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Boston University, and a doctorate in Health Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
