Perhaps the best way to introduce Dr. Robert D. Ballard is by way of his awards and the company he keeps.
To begin with, he received his Ph.D. in Marine Geology and Geophysics, has 23 honorary doctorates and is the recipient of the Newcomb Cleveland Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the best paper of the year in the prestigious Journal of Science and was recently inducted in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences preceded by Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein, making him a Scientist.
He has received the National Geographic Society’s most prestigious Hubbard Medal also received by Sir Ernest Shackleton, Admiral Bird, and Neil Armstrong as well as the Explorer’s Club Medal, the Order of Magellan, the Livingston Medal, and the Lindbergh Award making him an Explorer.
He founded the JASON Foundation for Education, which is an award-winning foundation having reached more than 15 million middle school teachers and students with his STEM educational programs making him an Educator.
Two of his 26 books were #1 Best Sellers on the New York Times and London Times making him an Author.
He was a Distinguished Military Graduate in Army Intelligence, a Commander in the U.S. Navy, was a recipient of the Lone Sailor Award along with Roger Staubach, and most recently had a Navy ship the USNS ROBERT BALLARD named after him, making him a Military Officer with 30 years of service
He co-produced more than 35 television specials receiving numerous Emmys as well as a film nominated for an Academy Award and worked with Steven Spielberg to produce the TV Series SeaQuest DSV making him a Film Maker.
Born in Kansas, raised in California and now lives in Connecticut where he was inducted into the Connecticut Hall a Fame along with Mark Twain, Paul Newman, and Catherine Hepburn making him a 13th generation American.
He received the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal in the Oval Office from the President of the United States along with Hal Holbrook and John Updike making him a Humanitarian of great distinction.
And finally, he was a Founding Director of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation; receiving their Lifetime Achievement Award for helping to create and expand America’s Marine Sanctuaries, making him a Conservationist
So that makes Dr. Robert D. Ballard, a scientist, explorer, educator, author, TV producer, military officer, a humanitarian, a conservationist, and an American presently living in the State of Connecticut.
