Chuck Farmer is Vice President for Research and Statistical Services at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. He holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Old Dominion University and a Doctorate in Statistics from Iowa State University.
Since joining IIHS in 1994, Dr. Farmer has authored studies on many aspects of traffic safety, including the effects of enhanced vehicle technology, regulation and refinement of driver behavior, and roadway design. His recent research has focused on the effects of raising speed limits and how they affect roadway safety and additional fatalities, as well as research on impaired driving and countermeasures to reduce impaired driving. He has also recently worked on an analysis of emerging passive alcohol detection technology that would keep impaired drivers off the road by preventing the vehicle from starting.
